Understanding Hoppe Locks: Key Information for Repair and Replacement

If you're dealing with Hoppe locks, it's crucial to know their specifics, especially when it comes to repair and replacement. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate Hoppe locks and ensure you're making informed decisions.

Key Details About Hoppe Locks

Internal Repair Parts: Hoppe does not offer internal repair parts for their locks. If you need replacements or repairs, you can purchase either the lower assembly or a complete lock that includes both the lower assembly and upper extensions. Note that the lock case itself is not available from Hoppe.

Identification and Verification: To avoid errors and ensure the correct parts are ordered, it’s essential to provide detailed information. Fill out a worksheet and include clear images of the lock. Hoppe's information sent to customers may not always be accurate, so double-check details when ordering.

HLS7 Lock Specifications:

Configurations: The Hoppe HLS7 features various locking point configurations, including 3-point locks with a Hook, Shootbolt, or Tongue, and 5-point locks with combinations of Tongues and Shootbolts or Hooks and Shootbolts.

Faceplate and Backset: This lock is available with a 5/8” (16mm) faceplate, a 1-3/4” (45mm) backset, and a 3-5/8” (92mm) handle-to-cylinder spacing (PZ).

Door Viewing: Always view doors from the outside to determine handing; inswing or outswing does not affect this.

Panic Function: The HLS7 series includes a panic function, allowing simultaneous retraction of all locking points by pushing down on the inside handle. This function ensures that one side of the lock is always unlocked for quick egress.

Operation Instructions:

Locking the Door: Turn the thumb turn to the horizontal position or use the key to lock the door. Lift the handle to extend the deadbolt (outside is locked).

Unlocking from Inside: Depress the lever to retract the latch and deadbolt. The thumb turn returns to the vertical position automatically.

Unlocking from Outside: Insert the key, turn it, and then depress the lever to open the door.

Assembly Details:

The bottom assembly is half of the multipoint locking system. The top extension, which varies in length according to door height, completes the system.
Standard handle height is 36 inches.

Handing and Alignment:

Determining Handing: Handing is determined from the exterior view. Left hinges indicate a Left Hand (LH) door, and right hinges indicate a Right Hand (RH) door. Inswing or outswing does not affect handing for panic functions.

Reversing Handing: The spring latch can be pulled out with pliers to reverse the latch for inswing or outswing. If the panic function is on the wrong side, it can be adjusted.

Torx Screws: T15 Torx screws in the "A" position indicate Right Hand (RH) and in the "B" position indicate Left Hand (LH).

Proper Alignment: Ensure the "half-moon" slot next to the handle hub has the nub in the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position, depending on the gear box side. The handle set with spring assist will naturally move this to the proper position when installed. When out of the door, verify it's at 3 or 9.

By understanding these details, you can effectively manage Hoppe locks, whether you're repairing or replacing them. Remember, clear communication and accurate information are key to a successful outcome.
